MIKA MORISHITA Director, TIFFCOM Contents Market ✕ As the head of TIFFCOM, the market that runs alongside the Tokyo International Film Festival, Morishita has been instrumental in doubling the number of foreign exhibitors at the event. The market's growth prompted a move to a larger venue this year.

TIFFCOM2012, the multi-content market held in affiliation with the Tokyo International Film Festival and organized jointly by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and UNIJAPAN, was held from Tuesday, October 23, to Thursday, October 25. This year marked a highly successful move to a new venue: the Hotel Grand Pacific LE DAIBA, in Tokyo’s Odaiba area.

TIFFCOM2012 saw 229 exhibiting entities from 25 countries and regions, an increase from last year’s 20. Within the 229, 113 entities (almost half) were new exhibitors. The final tally for buyers showed registrations from 34 entities (compared to last year’s 28) and a total of 983 buyers, a 120% increase. The number of international pavilions went up to eight compared to last year’s seven, with Canada, South Korea (with separate pavilions for film and television), Malaysia, Mexico (a first-time entry), Spain (first-time entry), Taiwan, and the United Kingdom exhibiting.

Market screenings, which were held in five venues both within and outside the Hotel Grand Pacific LE DAIBA, also increased this year, with 47 screenings compared to last year’s 36. Furthermore, the number of films made available through the DVD Library went up to 255.

The number of buyers who attended TIFFCOM2012 is listed below, sorted by country and region.

The total number of visitors during the three days of TIFFCOM2012 was 12,683.

TIFFCOM2013 is scheduled to be held at the end of October 2013, once again at the Hotel Grand Pacific LE DAIBA.

TIFFCOM2012, which was held from Tuesday, October 23, 2012 to Thursday,
October 25, has ended. The market was held at the Hotel Grand Pacific
LE DAIBA. During the three days of TIFFCOM, we saw a great number of
exhibitors, buyers, visitors, and members of the press. We would like
to thank each and every one of you who attended TIFFCOM.

For the first time this year, three other affiliated markets were held
in the same venue: Tokyo International Music Market, Tokyo International
Anime Festival (2012 fall edition), and Creative Market Tokyo, which
features character-driven content. By experiencing Japanese creations
in all their varied forms, we hope you were able to feel the power of
Japanese content.

From the bottom of our hearts, the TIFFCOM staff thanks you for

■ 　　　　　　　　　Today's Report (October 26)　　　　　　　　　 ■

On this final day, the forum, "The Great Film Industry Debate:
Producers Versus Students" was held. Presented by Bunkatsushin,
the Japanese industry newspaper, the forum welcomed speakers such as
film journalist Hiroo Otaka, film producer Toshiaki Nakazawa (SEDIC
International), and Genki Kawamura (Toho).
Members of the Tokyo International Film Festival student support staff
also took part to discuss how young people today view cinema, and held
a lively debate with the leading producers of the country.

<Study Tour for Students>
For the first time ever, a study tour was organized at TIFFCOM.
20 students each from Keio University and the Vantan Design Institute
took part in the tour, which aimed to develop future filmmakers.
The young participants were very eager to be exposed to the real
world of international content business.

<Project Market>
At TIFFCOM2012 Project Market, numerous meetings were held with
international producers to discuss film projects.
If you have an idea for a film project, please consider participating
in next year's Project Market.

<Screening & Teach-in>
Film director Noboru Iguchi held a teach-in after the screening of his
film "Dead Sushi", which had its market premiere at TIFFCOM.
In front of guests from Japan, the US, and Hong Kong, among others,
he spoke eloquently about his project.

<TIFFCOM International Pavilion Luncheon>
Around 80% of overseas exhibitors exhibited their projects in a pavilion
setting this year. Representatives from each pavilion - Canada,
Great Britain, Mexico, Spain, South Korea (films), South Korea (television),
Taiwan, and Malaysia - were invited to take part in a special luncheon.

Today marks the end of TIFFCOM, but tomorrow will see a special TIFFCOM
event: a cruise around Tokyo Bay, held on the ship Shin Tokyo Maru.
Why not take this rare occasion to ride on the Shin Tokyo Maru, and enjoy
the Tokyo sights via sea?

2012 marks the special year when TIFFCOM switched from its Roppongi
venue to Odaiba for the first time. To commemorate this change,
the nearby Tokyo Gate Bridge and Tokyo Big Sight will be lit up in
green, the official color for TIFFCOM and the Tokyo International
Film Festival!

The new Tokyo Gate Bridge, which opened only this February, and
Tokyo Big Sight, Japan's largest convention center (located in
Ariake): two monuments that represent the Odaiba area will be
celebrating TIFFCOM along with us.

From Saturday, October 20 to Sunday, October 28, the Tokyo Gate
Bridge will be lit a beautiful green from sundown to midnight.
Tokyo Big Sight will be illuminated in green from sundown to 10 pm.

If you are staying in the Odaiba district, why not enjoy a night
walk and take in the sight of a green Tokyo Gate Bridge and
Tokyo Big Sight?

The situations of the Latin American film industry and Japanese
films  in this region are not well known to those living in Japan.

JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) will host a seminar called,
"The Export of Japanese Cinema -Exporting and Remaking -",
with buyers from the United States and Russia present as speakers.

There are two main methods for the international development of
a film. One is to export the completed film overseas and have a
local distributor distribute the film; another is to utilize the
story or its cultural background and remake the film to suit the
overseas market.

Tetsuya Fujimura will moderate the event, and film distributors
from the US and Russia, as well as a US producer, will consider
the reality and issues behind bringing a Japanese film overseas.

TIFFCOM will finally take place next week!
To enter TIFFCOM, you will need an ID badge.

Buyers, visitors, sellers, and press members who have registered
a photo by September 2 and have offices located within Japan have
been sent their ID badges via post.
If you have registered by September 2 but have yet to receive your
ID badge, please check your mail.

Those who completed their photo registration between September 2
to October 5 will be able to retrieve their ID badges at the
registration desk. (This applies to both international registrants
and domestic registrants.)
If you have not received your ID pass, please visit the registration
desk when you arrive at TIFFCOM.

Those who have not completed their photo registration will be able
to take photos on the spot and create their ID badges.
It may take some time to issue your ID badge afterward, so please
make sure you arrive at the venue with plenty of time to spare.

*For those who have received their ID badges: you will not be able
to enter the venue without your badge, so please be sure to bring
it with you.

*For exhibitors
If you have registered by the deadline, we will send ID badges for
all exhibitors to your contact representative.

The ID screenings reservation page, which will allow TIFFCOM users
to attend Tokyo International Film Festival screenings along with
members of the press and industry professionals, has opened.

three days prior to the day of the screening, and until 30 minutes
before the start of the screening.

TIFFCOM2012 registrants will be able to reserve screenings by logging

*Please note that the venue for ID screenings is Toho Cinemas in
Roppongi Hills, the main venue for the Tokyo International Film
Festival (TIFF).

Tokyo International Film Festival, the film festival affiliated
with TIFFCOM, will be held at Roppongi Hills from October 20-28, 2012.

Starting this year, some of the films submitted to the Tokyo
International Film Festival will be available to view from your
own computer, via a video-on-demand service called Festival Scope.

Start of service: Early November (scheduled)
Films available for viewing: Two Japanese films from the main
competition, nine Japanese films from the Japanese Eyes section
(films eligible for an award)

<What is Festival Scope?>
Festival Scope is a video-on-demand service that streams films from
collaborating film festivals. To view films via Festival Scope,
paid registration is required, as well as an invitation from the
exhibitor.
